Romanian voters went to the polls on Sunday, November 22, 2009 to choose a President, but no candidate obtained an absolute majority in the election, and a runoff vote was held on Sunday, December 6, 2009. The unexpected and controversial outcome of Romania's 2009 presidential runoff election, on Global Economy Matters, has further information about this year's presidential election in the southeastern European nation.
Meanwhile, in a national referendum held simultaneously with the first round of the presidential election, voters overwhelmingly approved proposals to replace the existing bicameral legislature with an unicameral Parliament, and to limit its size to a maximum of 300 members.
